Why Does My Voice Change Every Day?

Do you ever feel like your voice feels or sounds different almost every day? Whether you sing every day, every other day, once a week, or whatever works for you, it's easy to feel like your voice is changing all the time. Well, it's true! Okay, maybe our voices don't ACTUALLY change, but they do shift depending on countless variables.

Why does progress not always FEEL like progress?

Like with most things in life, progress is not linear. For example, if you go to the gym 3 times a week, you probably notice that sometimes you can lift really heavy weights, or run for longer on the treadmill, while other times you have to lower that weight, or cut your running time short. This is because at the end of the day, we are only human. We can't always force ourselves to lift heavier weights or run for longer. The same goes for our voices. Some days our range might not reach the full extent of our abilities, or our breath might not feel as supported. This is okay and completely normal. The trick is to be patient with yourself and meet your voice where it's at for the day.

Progress is a wave.

You may not always feel like your voice is improving, some days you may even feel like your skill has declined. The important thing to remember like we mentioned before, is that progress is not linear, but more like a wave in the ocean. The key to progress overtime is practicing, and practicing with intention. This means using all the techniques you've learned, and listening when your voice says "That's too much for me and isn't going to happen today". Forcing yourself to reach your max range every day will only cause pain and damage to your vocal folds.

Be patient and kind with yourself

Always remember that your voice will shift and change, but as long as you keep practicing mindfully, overtime you will notice those positive improvements. I suggest finding a song you like, and making 2(or more) recordings. The first will be when you have just learned the song and begin working on it, and the second after you know it really well and feel confident. Throughout the process of learning and practice, you might feel like there isn't much of a difference from day to day, but I promise with the right types of practice, you'll see a huge difference from that first recording, to the last one.

Believe in yourself and keep practicing. You've got this!
